While businesses work hard to build up their brand, too many of their employees aren't doing the same for themselves, one researcher suggests.

Nathan Hiller, an associate professor of management at Florida International University, argued during this year's Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology annual conference that it is increasingly important for employees to ensure their own marketability by creating a brand within their organization.

The strategy, termed "personal branding," allows employees to clearly define their potential and separate themselves from others in the workplace while demonstrating unique contributions to their organisation..“There are times when people are narrowly defined by their job description or assignment and feel they have the skills and abilities to make an even greater contribution to the organization," Hiller said. "Personal branding is simply making others both within and outside the workplace aware of one’s capabilities."

When executed strategically, personal branding can lead to increased visibility within an organization and better work opportunities.

Those on the panel — which also included Maria Arboleda, Veronica Harvey and Lisa Lewen from Aon Hewitt, Kelly Goff of ExxonMobil, Charles Thompson from Taylor Strategy Partners and A. James Illingworth of APTMetrics, Inc. — said individuals who engage in branding in an organization need to consider several factors when determining the brand they want to sell, including their owntechnical skill set, the needs of the organization and softer skills such as networking and interpersonal relationships.

Hiller acknowledged there is a fine line between personal branding and self-promotion.

"There is a difference and personal branding needs to be carried out to benefit the work team and organization and not be detrimental," he said

Prospective King

Once upon a time , there was a king in the old Eastern region . He realized that it was near the time he sought the heir to his kingdom . He did not inherit the kingdom to one of his subordinates or his son , but he decided to do something different .

He called all the young kids in the whole kingdom . He said , " It is time for me to step down and choose the new king . I decided to choose one of you . "

Every day he would water the seed , and observe if it had grown . After a few weeks , some of the other youths began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow . Ling went home and checking his seed , but to no avail .

Three weeks , 4 , 5 weeks went by . Still no result. Today, the young people discuss about their plants but Ling still has not grown seedlings , and he began to feel like a loser . Six months passed , still has not grown too . He thought that he had killed his seed . Everyone else had trees and tall plants , but he did not have anything . Ling did not say anything to her . He kept waiting for his seed to grow .

One year had passed and all the young people throughout the kingdom brought their plants to the king to be assessed . Ling desperate and do not want to leave with an empty pot . But his mother encouraged him to go and bring the pot .

Ling to be honest about what happened to his seed , his mother's advice . Ling realized that his mother was right . And he went to the palace to bring an empty pot . When Ling arrived , he was amazed to see the variety of plants grown by the other executives . Everything is beautiful , in size and shape . Ling put the empty pot on the floor and many people laughed . A few felt sorry for him .

When the king arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his people . Ling tried to hide in the back . " My, what great plants , trees , flowers you have grown , " said the king . "Today , one of you will be appointed the next emperor ! " Instantly , the emperor spotted Ling at the back of the room with his empty pot . He ordered his guards to bring forward Ling .

Ling was terrified . " The king knows I'm a loser ! Maybe he would order me to be punished ! " When Ling got to the front , the king asked his name . " My name is Ling , " said Ling . Everyone laughed at him .

The king of calming the situation . He saw Ling , and then announced to the whole kingdom , " Look , these guys are the new king ! His name is Ling ! " Ling could not believe what had just said to the king . He could not even grow his seed , why he could be the new emperor ?

Then the king said , " One year ago today , I gave everyone here a seed . And I told you to pick it up , plant , and care for her , then bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds that would not grow . all of you , except Ling , have brought me trees and plants and flowers . When you found that the seed would not grow , you substituted another seed . Only Ling who had the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with seed in it . then so , he which will be the new king . "

I learned skills such as preparation, making lists, grouping tasks together, time management, speed of service, urgency, knifework, butchery, food science, and organization. Learning the skill of closing prospects is the same idea. You can either invest money in to proper training and knowledge acquisition, or you can invest time and figure it out yourself.

What makes the top-tier leaders different is that at some point in their home based business career, they decided that enough was enough. Remember my bolded point in the paragraph before this that you can either invest time or money. Of the two, the only one that is a constantly diminishing is time!

Money can always be had again and again, and it may seem like it leaves faster than it comes, but lost time can never be recovered. Time, not money, is our most precious resource. Your leaders have spent more money in investing in themselves than you, and thus they have a larger pool of knowledge to grasp from.

The second part of why your leaders do better at closing prospects than you is that they APPLY their knowledge more frequently than you. They have trained their mindset that success in a home based business system is all about working the numbers. The person who gets in front of the most people wins, assuming they have the knowledge to prospect. If you want to learn how to be closing prospects more efficiently, you must go out and get your "NOs". Go through the fakers and find yourself the makers.

When you practice your application of knowledge, it keeps getting better. You learn how to adjust and control after each interaction, and you get better. You may have to go through a series of rejection before you get your first triumph, but you need to persist. Repetition is the mother of skill, and the skill of this business is closing prospects. Go out and challenge yourself today: make a goal to get 100 NOs. Change your mindset; I dare you. If you go out looking for 100 NOs, you'll be shocked at how challenging it is to get 100 NOs. The MLMer is also known as a MLM 'Junkie'.

The MLMer is always looking for the next big thing - the next super duper comp plan that is going to pay them 2000% more for doing diddly squat. They are constantly jumping from one company to the next and have 'shiny object' syndrome which constantly distracts them from their goals. They rely on their emotions when making a decision. They let the over hyped launch calls, websites and and big promises of individuals guide their decision making. The are typically in multiple deals, and in many over many years. They never learn to laser focus to make the long term residual income... because they are living week to week, or at best month to month.

Be careful - because this affliction has a cousin. It's the elusive search for the magic 'system'. If you are up all night reading every so-called guru's training on how you can make money in your sleep without ever calling your prospects... If you are spending your days in the technical side of internet Network Marketing instead of talking to humans... you are in the endless spiral of looking for the magic dust.

The Professional Network Marketer aligns themselves with one GREAT company and builds for LIFE

They don't do what they do for the money - but for the sake of creating something bigger than themselves. They do it in service - for the greater good. They don't make excuses for themselves, and don't give excuses when asked why the goal wasn't accomplished. They state the facts... not lame excuses!

I do think that most people begin a home based business with the MLMer mentality ~ But most of us will mature into the mindset of the Professional Network Marketer. Eventually it is no longer about how much money you can make 'off of' people, but instead its about how many people you can help to succeed in this incredible profession. Your ability to distinguish between a 'great' company, and a fly by night program designed to fleece people out of their hard earned seed money becomes honed.
